Description
Chad Twedt’s Ostinato Suite No. 2 consists four ostinato movements. An ostinato is a short musical pattern that repeats throughout a significant portion of a composition.

The suite begins with the extreme darkness of “Merciful Cry.” “Chinese Tea Dance” is the only movement out of both ostinato suites that includes a perfectly rigid, non-changing ostinato thoughout. “Nocturne” features a beautiful 16-note melody that utilizes all 12 tones of the chromatic scale, and “Grand Ostinato” (originally commissioned by the South Reno United Methodist Church) contains an irregular 7/8 meter and is literally the grandest of the ostinatos in the first two suites, requiring great dexterity and stamina to play.
Both “Merciful Cry” and “Nocturne” are accessible to early advanced piano students.
All of these ostinatos seek to accomplish two seemingly contradictory goals: to capture the imagination and interest of the listener with colorful variety and contrast, and to hypnotize the listener with mesmerizing, repetitive patterns. All of the movements stand alone quite well as their own separate pieces.
Chad Twedt was awarded the 2005 Nevada Arts Council Fellowship Grant for the composing of this and other works. The NAC Fellowship Grant is a $5,000 grant that is awarded each year based on uniqueness and quality of work.
