Description
Ostinato Suite No. 1 is Chad Twedt’s first published work of youthful energy, consisting of four ostinato movements. An ostinato is a short musical pattern that repeats throughout a significant portion of a composition.
Audio preview of all four movements:
These works seek to balance a variety of contrasting emotions. The first two movements, “Outburst” and “Mother Nature’s Clock,” feature dramatic contrast. “Outburst” showcases dramatic contrast between musical simplicity and complexity, while “Mother Nature’s Clock” presents abrupt contrast between dry and wet (pedaled) texture. “Spellbound” seeks to hypnotize the listener with a mysterious mood of stasis, and “Victory Bells” resolves this mystery with a spirit of energetic triumph.
All of these ostinatos seek to accomplish two seemingly contradictory goals: to capture the imagination and interest of the listener with colorful variety and contrast, and to hypnotize the listener with mesmerizing, repetitive patterns. All of the movements stand alone quite well as their own separate pieces.
Chad Twedt was awarded the 2005 Nevada Arts Council Fellowship Grant for the composing of this and a few other works. The NAC Fellowship Grant is a $5,000 grant that is awarded each year based on uniqueness and quality of work.
