Description
Chad Twedt’s four-piano arrangement of the great opening chorus (“Herr, unser Herrscher”) from J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion. This is an incredibly dramatic work, capturing in the most beautiful way the deep anguish of Christ’s passion. The long, sustained tones of the woodwinds in the original are difficult to simulate on the percussion instrument that the piano is, and Twedt addresses this challenge of decay through tremolos and repetition.
The Soundcloud recording below is a complete computer rendering of the work.
This work was commissioned by the four-piano group Piano 4te in 2025, who will also give the world premiere performance in December 2026.
